Siyum Hashas in Just ONE Year – Kollel Shas Yiden, UK

Siyum Hashas in Just ONE Year - Kollel Shas Yiden, UK

Maran Hamekubal, Hagaon Harav Yaakov Meir Shechter, shlit”a, opened his home to the avreicheim geonim of Kollel Shas Yiden UK, who were visiting Eretz Yisroel, for them to celebrate their completion of the entire Shas. They were in Eretz Yisroel to participate in a public farher together with the other five Shas Yiden Kollelim based in Eretz Yisroel.

Despite his being away on vacation, Rav Shechter had insisted that this siyum take place at his home. The siyum was attended by the founder of Shas Yiden, the Pozna Rov, Hagaon Harav Avrohom Halevi Eisen, shlit”a, the Rosh Reshet Hakollelim, Hagaon Harav Moshe Isaac Samet, shlit”a and the patron of Shas Yiden UK, Reb Yisroel Moskowitz, n”y.

Incredible Accomplishment

In just 14 years, through the Shas Yiden Kollel Network, the ability to know Gemorah and Rishonim in detail, and the concept of being a metzuyan has taken a giant leap forward. To be accepted at Shas Yiden, each avreich metzuyan is expected to know and be tested on 450 blatt! Following a most demanding curriculum and regimen, studying 9 blatt a day – five times – and with every Rashi and Tosfos, they will know the entire Shas. All this will be further honed to ensure mastery of the entire Talmud down to which page and line the matter can be found, and all by heart.

No Vacation Days – not even Shabbos and Yom Tov

Yes, the Shas Yiden avreichim are required to learn every day of the year. The only easing of the regimen is that the amount to be accomplished on Shabbos and Yom Tov and the days preceding them is that the quantity is halved. To ensure that no one falls behind there are regular questions to be answered and every month they all undergo written examinations of 225 blatt! Gedolei Torah have remarked that never, since the creation of the Talmud by Ravina and Rav Ashi, has there been such a demanding curriculum for an entire student body – from the great academies in Babylon and through to Europe and Ashkenaz. And this applies to each of the Shas Yiden kollelim – five in Israel and one in the UK. Today, there are 102 avreichim geonim.

It is no wonder that the Sar Hatorah, Maran Hagaon Hagadol Harav Chaim Kanievsky, zt”l, loved hearing, testing and speaking to the Shas Yiden avreichim when they would squeeze into his home to be tested on the length and breadth of Shas. Invariably, with his broad smile he would declare, Zei kennen Shas! (They know Shas!)

At the Siyum

Reb Yisroel Moskowitz, a major patron of the Kollel, was honored with reciting the kaddish at the siyum. Rav Shecthter delivered divrei bracha, and fervently praised the avreicheim geonim. He had always pined to see yungeleit of such a high caliber who mastered the entire Shas, literally.

At the conclusion, the Pozna Rov surpised Reb Yisroel Moskowitz, the patron of the Kollel, as he suggested the establishment of a Kollel Choshen Mishpat within the framework of “Torah 24”, another dynamic initiative of the Pozna Rov. Indeed, this coming Elul, a Choshen Mishpat Kollel will be opened, for avreicheim metzuyonim to master the intricate and complex halochos of Choshen Mishpat. The Rosh Kollel will be Rav Elimelech Schwirtz, one of the leading yungeleit of Kollel Shas Yiden, Yerushalayim, and son in law of Reb Yisroel Moskowitz. Rav Schwirtz has extensive expertise in Choshen Mishpat.

The Shas Yiden UK contingent returned to London elevated and inspired by these

experiences, and with thanks on their lips toward the Pozna Rov, and to Reb Yisroel Moskowitz,

patron of the Kollel, for enabling them to spend their days and nights in the tent of Torah.

“Facing 100 ‘Reb Chaim Kanievskys” – Hagaon Harav Eli Stefansky

“Facing 100 ‘Reb Chaim Kanievskys”
- Hagaon Harav Eli Stefansky

by Rabbi Eliezer Sandler

  • Maran Rosh Hayeshiva Harav Boruch Mordechai Ezrachi, shlit”a: “I am like dust beneath the soles of your feet, hallevai my portion should be with yours!”
  • Hamashpia Hagadol, Hatzadik Harav Elimelech Biederman, shlit”a: “A Yissachar-Zevulun shutfus (partnership) with Shas Yiden is mehadrin min hamehadrin.”

Seven Gedolei Torah spent hours enjoying true give-and-take at the Shas Yiden 100 Siyumei Hashasim. No longer was the associated annual farher just questions and answers. The thrust and parry of true debate enthralled the Gedolim, the avreichim geonim and the American and UK visitors alike. It raised the concept of a ‘Shas farher’ to a new and dynamic height!

A Tradition of Public Farheren

The annual farheren of the entire Shas and Siyum Hashassim gatherings of the Kollel Shas Yiden Network have evolved into a tradition demonstrating incredible, detailed and broad Torah scholarship. The video recordings are eagerly anticipated for viewing worldwide by talmidei chachomim and yeshiva bochrim alike (www.shasyiden.com). Until his last year, the avreichim geonim would cram into the home of the late Nasi, Sar Hatorah, Maran Hagaon Hagadol Harav Chaim Kanievsky, ztk”l, where he would farher them extensively, and which he said gave him great pleasure.

The ‘line-up’ of the Geonim, shlit”a at this year’s siyum in Beit Shemesh who tested the mettle of the avreichim geonim last week are a veritable Who’s Who of Torah learning – Maran Harav Boruch Mordechai Ezrachi, Maran Harav Itamar Garbuz, Harav Yaakov Ades, Harav Elimelech Biederman, Harav Shmuel Yaakov Landau and Harav Eliyahu Stefansky. Among those who graced the dais was Harav Mordechai Stern, Rav of Heichal Dovid, Lawrence, NY.

The Pozna Rov, Harav Hagaon Avrohom Eisen, shlit”a, founder of Shas Yiden 14 years ago, started this tradition to give honor to the avreichim geonim who study at Shas Yiden. It is also to give the supporters of this great and holy project the opportunity to see close up the fruits of their support month after month, and to develop more and more avreichim geonim who have a remarkable knowledge of every word of the Talmud, Rashi and Tosafos. The Gedolei Torah have come to look forward to engaging with the avreichim geonim of Shas Yiden.

As he concluded his farher, Harav Eli Stefansky exclaimed “I was faced with 100 Reb Chaim Kanievsky’s. I have tested them. I have seen them and their prowess.”

The Bren of Torah Invigorates

Maran Harav Boruch Mordechai Ezrachi, Rosh Yeshivas Ateres Yisroel and a Senior Member of Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah, has a grandson at Shas Yiden. Despite his advanced age, weak state of health and the effort needed to attend, Rav Ezrachi came to Beit Shemesh and climbed the stairs to the dais on the stage. Yet, as he began to debate the avreichim geonim and discuss specific and complicated sections of the Talmud, any hint of tiredness or weakness vanished and his face shone with excitement and joy at the incredible knowledge flowing from the avreichim geonim. He became even more enthused when he asked questions on sugyos (issues/subjects) in kodshim that required careful and deep reasoning. He was simply amazed to hear how the avreichim geonim managed to quickly and easily respond to all these questions with clear answers.

“Hallevai my portion in shomayim should be like yours,” said Rav Ezrachi with much emotion. “! In Heaven, they see what you are doing and how you know it. You live it and it stands before your eyes. I am sure there must be a tumultuous response to these moments — with a hundred avreichim geonim who know all the words of Shas. In truth, one should be jealous of you for this great feeling, as you are able to study and contemplate Shas the whole year through, and how it lives with you before your very eyes. The fact that there is a group of incredible talmidei chachomim like you, puts the entire people of Israel on a different level. It obliges us all to express our great appreciation to the Pozna Rov who came up with this idea of establishing such an institution, and he has truly given the Jewish people of Israel a gift that is beyond compare.”

And then, he brought his fist down three times, exclaiming each time –  ‘Every year, Shas!’ ‘Every year, Shas!’ ‘Every year, Shas!’

Questions – Complicated and Complex

Maran Rosh Yeshivas Orchos Torah, Hagaon Harav Itamar Garbuz, enjoyed the lively interaction with the avreichim geonim for an extended session and tested them through the length and breadth of Shas and expressed his amazement at the incredible knowledge of the avreichim geonim.

His questions focused on all-encompassing knowledge of concepts and issues. For example: How many disputes between Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Shimon are there in Maseches Shabbos? The avreichim geonim noted not only listed them, but added many halachic references regarding difference between Rabbi Shimon and Rabbi Yehuda, as well as the comments of Tosfos throughout the length of Maseches Shabbos. And then they branched off into the differences that apply in Maseches Eiruvin that also deals extensively with the laws of Shabbos. He peppered the avreichim geonim with numerous such questions, addressing groups of five at a time before opening the questions to the others. The answers flowed forth at an amazing pace, much to the pleasure of the participants and that of the attendees from abroad who were excited at the incredible standard of Torah knowledge they were witnessing.

After an extensive session with the avreichim geonim, with great enthusiasm, Rav Garbuz exclaimed that it was a great honor and zechus for him to have this opportunity to engage with such avreichim geonim in Torah learning. “In you, the Jewish people are to be blessed,” he said. “It is impossible to estimate or to describe the greatness of the zechus of those who support this holy project that raises the grandeur of Israel and the holy Torah in such an amazing fashion.”

The Mashpia Hagadol – the Great Motivator

The mashpia hagadol ‘Reb Meilech’ Biederman burst out with a clarion call: “You see seated before you 100 avreichim geonim who know the entire Shas. Literally, 100 holy aronei kodesh (holy Torah arks) before our eyes. Where does one see such a phenomenon in this world. In Shomayim, confronted by such prowess, they stand and pray in face of such an awesome sight. How immense is the zechus of the donors and supporters! Through support for this cause, your merit and destiny will be enhanced for the good and for success in all matters, both material and spiritual.”

Practical Halacha

Harav Shmuel Yaakov Landau, Dayan and Rav of the Belz Beis Medrash ‘Yad Cohen’ in Beit Shemesh, has a son-in-law among the avreichim geonim.  He debated with the avreichim geonim at length through a number of sugyos. Among them was the sugya dealing with “A person cannot transfer or sell something that does not yet exist”, such as futures etc. He also dealt with the question of whether a person may appoint a messenger to perform a mission regarding something that does not yet exist, and other matters in this regard.

Spellbinding Give and Take

Nothing short of spellbinding was the give-and-take between Hamekubal Harav Hagaon Yaakov Ades and the avreichim geonim. He began with words of encouragement and then launched into debate on sugyos throughout Shas. He demonstrated incredible bekius and it was as if the entire Shas was an open book in front of his eyes. He just could not hold back from the torrent of discussion with the avreichim geonim and continued to speak with them at length after the farher as his face shone with the joy of the Torah. The avreichim geonim loved the intensity of the give-and-take.

After Rav Ades came away with a deep impression of the scholarship of the avreichim geonim, he turned to the donors who were watching the give-and-take with unconcealed enjoyment, he said to them: “I have a good idea for you. If any of you was thinking of making a donation to Shas Yiden, you should double it! And if you can, add a few zeros! You should know that the zechus of supporting such a great and holy project, is indeed significant, and it’s not a simple matter. Such support obligates the avreichim geonim as well. You should pray for the donors and supporters that they should be blessed with all that is good through the power of the Torah and your tefillos!

He gives A Daf to 18,000 Yiden Every Day!

Harav Hagaon Eliyahu Stefansky, Nasi of the Mercaz Daf Hayomi, conducts the most popular and populous shiur in the world, to 18,000 listeners Sunday to Friday. He gives a Daf Hayomi shiur in English. His unique style, broad scholarship, colloquial English peppered with witty and forceful comments and appropriate personal greetings that are at once charming and meaningful, have earned him an enthusiastic international reputation.  He was one of the farherers in fluent and colloquial Hebrew, and with a smile, and he captured the imagination and enthusiastic response of the Shas Yiden avreichim geonim.

The morning following the farher he prefaced his daily shiur with the following:

“A very special thing happened to me yesterday. There are chaburas known as Shas Yiden – a hundred kollel guys – about 5 or 6 kollelim in Israel in a network called ‘Shas Yiden’.

“These avreichim geonim finish Shas every year, and they know Shas cold… If you go online (www.shasyiden.com/farher) you can see Rav Chaim Kanievsky farhering them… And other gedolei Torah farhering them.

“Well, last night Rav Boruch Mordechai Ezrachi (94 years old) the oldest of the Rosh Yeshivos, and some other Rosh Yeshivos farhered them… and they asked me also to farher them, and so I did. It was an amazing and special experience…”

Rav Stefansky addressed the avreichim geonim on many subjects in Shas. Then he ‘pulled out his ‘bag of tricks’. “I started out calm and easy and then I suddenly pulled out my illustrations that were especially created for the occasion. They had to decipher them and their riddles as to which subjects in Shas were being depicted, the context, the outcome and the halacha. This, too,

developed into an extended and lively session. It was quite exceptional.”

“It was a great zchus for me to test them. Truth is that I was not surprised at their knowledge because one of them is my chavrusa, and in our kollel we have another avreich who learns there in the afternoon – Belzer chosid, so I am familiar with them.

“But all together, it was just amazing.  Their knowledge… Afterwards I was talking with them and I asked: ‘Is there anyone here with a normal, average brain? Someone who is not an illuy and with a head of a gaon? In answer to my question, many of them raised their hands. So, I asked them for ideas or suggestions for chazora and memorizing, and that opened up an interesting discussion on the subject.

“Among all my questions I asked these:

  1. Where in the entire Shas are there seven consecutive words that begin with the Hebrew letter Chaf? A: Nedarim 10b
  2. Where in Shas are there 44 consecutive words that end with the Hebrew letter Nun? A: Shabbos 104
  3. In our sugya we just learned about Bar Padda, and I noticed a note in Art Scroll that says that he was the nephew of Bar Kappara on Meilah 4. So, I casually asked who was Bar Padda’s uncle. All of a sudden all of them, and they each had a microphone, called out together – Bar Kappara, Bar Kappara – Meila Daf Dalet, Meila Daf Dalet.

It was crazy, just crazy.

  1. Where does the Masores Hashas note a sugya (issue/subject) that is found on five consecutive folios of Shas? A: Gittin 20 – 24 – dealing with witnesses effecting a get.

“An incredible, amazing experience … Every year they chazer Shas, every year…”

Siyum Shassim, Presentations and the Dinner

After the lengthy farheren, there was a heartfelt and inspirational maariv led by Harav Ades. This was followed by the Siyum Shassim – each of the avreichim geonim had concluded Shas for the year.

Each of the kollel wives was personally presented with a cash-filled envelope in appreciation of their unstinting support for their husbands’ dedication to the very demanding study regimen at Shas Yiden. A sumptuous dinner followed for the kovod Hatorah, and in honor of those who support Torah, accompanied by song and music by Aharon Samet. All present agreed that the incredible ‘engagement-farher’ and siyumim combined to be a Torah happening to remember.

PS – Shabbos Reaction at Maran Harav Boruch Mordechai Ezrachi, shlit”a

On the Shabbos after the Siyumim-farher, Rav Boruch Mordechai could not contain his excitement about what he had witnessed at Shas Yiden. So, reported one of those who joined him at his Shabbos seuda.

He regaled them about the farher in which he had participated, describing the geonus (brilliance) that pulsated in the hall from the 100 avreichim geonim. “I have never been so moved and excited at a public gathering,” declared Rav Boruch Mordechai. “Happy is my portion that I was zocheh to witness this wondrous happening!”

PS – Reaction of a Shas Yiden Avreich

Shortly after the Siyumim-farher, one of the avreichim geonim commented. “I am just 27 and I tell you the truth – I never dreamed that I would get to this point in my learning. To know the entire Shas? For me, this was something achieved in previous generations.

However, here at Shas Yiden, I have managed to achieve the unbelievable in the merit of the framework, the unique methodology of learning that includes many, many revisions amid unceasing progress through the texts. I am excited today as never before, even my day of marriage…

PS – Overheard at the Siyumim

Two fathers of two of the Shas Yiden avreichim geonim were sitting together at the Siyumim Dinner, discussing their feelings of joy at the simcha in which their sons played an important part. “If all the gedolim here were not present, I would jump up and dance with abandonment – I have to hold myself back,” said one.

The other responded, “Even when I married off my children, I did not experience such incredible joy. This is just unbelievable, my son completed Shas and was tested on it thoroughly. My son knows Shas! It was worth being born, toiling all these years just to get to this most memorable occasion. I have merited to marry off all my children, and I must confess that I have never experienced such simcha as I do now.”

Tears at Another Amazing Farher of Shas Yiden

Tears at Another Amazing Farher of Shas Yiden

By Rabbi Eliezer Sandler

The first gathering for a public farher on the entire Shas since reaching the mark of 100 avreichim geonim was held this last Monday, 2 Elul, in Bet Shemesh.

Not only did the avreichim geonim demonstrate their prowess in the details of the Gemara, all the Rashis and Tosfos, they also amazed those present with their detailed knowledge and accurate quotations from all over the Rambam and his commentaries, from the Ktzos Hachoshen, Gilyon Hashas of Rabbi Akiva Eiger, Even Ha’Azel and other Acharonim. So many are still in their twenties, but their expansive Torah knowledge and recall is like that of scholars many, many years their senior.

The examiner was Maran Hagaon Harav Yitzchak Shmuel Schwartz, shlit”a, Rav and Rosh Kollel of Bais Medrash Chisda, in Bnei Brak. Renowned for his bekius in Shas and the meforshim, as well as the breadth of Halacha, he fired deep and searching questions that challenged the mettle of the avreichim geonim.

Examiner’s Amazement

“I had incredible simcha and oneg when I sat on the dais facing them… On each question that I put before them they brought answers from all over Shas, and close referencing Rashi and Tosfos, quotes from the Rishonim and from across the entire Torah spectrum,” commented Harav Schwartz.

“After asking them questions that required both quantitative and qualitative knowledge in Halacha and Aggada, fact and reasoning, I sat and reflected that their knowledge was amazing in its clarity and purity. Many of them are also proficient in Yerushalmi, Rambam, Tur and the Dalet Chelkei Shulchan Aruch.

“Thus, I express my heartfelt feelings and appreciation of Hagaon Harav Avrohom Halevi Eisen whose spirit caused him to rise and gird himself to establish this network of kollelim to develop true Shas Yiden who illuminate the world with their Torah. He has created a gathering place of avreichim who are fully proficient in the entire Torah… this great phenomenon, which never existed before and has never been heard of in all the previous generations.”

The Tears of a Special Guest

The holy Makover Rebbe shlit”a, from Kiyat Ata in the north, is renowned for his piety, holiness and scholarship. He knew of the prowess of the Shas Yiden avreichim geonim, and made time to attend the public farher. He was so inspired by the sight of all the avreichim together, all demonstrating a true mastery of the entire Shas, that he was moved to tears of joy. In a short address before departing the hall, his memorable words included the following:

“They study Torah in purity. With the power of the Torah they are protectors of this entire world and save it from many difficult decrees.

“Praised are those who support this holy project, and their reward is very great.”

“And now that we are in the month of Elul which is a propitious time for repentance that saves one from the harsh decree, one should be busy with repentance. However, Torah is a great purifier and is greater even than repentance and certainly must be a protection for the entire world.”

After the farher, the Makover Rebbe exclaimed: “Over the years I have witnessed many, many farhers of Torah and examples of erudition. But I have never, in my entire life, witnessed such an event where so many avreichim were gathered and tested together on the length and breadth of Shas, with non-stop questions, and the answers just came booming back.”

Shas Yiden Kollelim Welcomes 100th Avreich from Beis Hanasi, Maran Sar Hatorah, zt”l PLUS New Extra Bonuses for Avreichim

Shas Yiden Kollelim Welcomes 100th Avreich from
Beis Hanasi, Maran Sar Hatorah, zt”l
PLUS New Extra Bonuses for Avreichim

Over the last 14 years since its inception, the Shas Yiden Kollelim Network has electrified the Torah world by its determined approach to the learning and mastery of the entire Shas. Shas Yiden has popularized the concept of learning gantz Shas. Each of its avreichim geonim completes Shas five times every year, AND with every Rashi and Tosfos. To facilitate learning the entire Shas and the development of true Shas Yiden, with the brocha of the Sar Hatorah zt”l, six such kollelim with 100 avreichim geonim were established. (After the success of the first Shas Yiden Kollel in Bet Shemesh, Rav Chaim gave a brocho to create 10!)

Milestone – 100th Avreich – from Beis Hanasi

It is with great pride that Shas Yiden announces that it has accepted its 100th avreich gaon from Beis Hanasi of Shas Yiden, the late Sar Hatorah, zt”l. He is already proficient in the entire Shas and is the son-in-law of Hagaon Harav Yitzchak Shaul Kanievsky, shlit”a, son of the Sar Hatorah.

The commitment to lomdei Torah at Shas Yiden was especially noted by the late Nasi of Shas Yiden, the Sar Hatorah, zt”l. He, personally, enjoyed the Shas Yiden Kollelim, and especially when the avreichim geonim would gather in his home and he would farher them throughout Shas. His face would beam with joy. On one occasion, he rose from his chair to greet the Pozna Rov to emphasize the great appreciation that he felt to the person who founded Shas Yiden; the one who developed this incredible Torah project, and merited to train avreichim geonim who are fully conversant in the entire Shas.

NEW BONUSES at Shas Yiden

The Shas Yiden Kolel Network has already acquired a prestigious and respected name across the Torah world. It is known for its unprecedented challenge to all its avreichim geonim to ‘push the envelope’ further and further, in their quest to master the study of Shas.

This quarter, a new thrust to enhance learning and retention was introduced at Shas Yiden. The avreichim geonim are required to sit for additional written tests each quarter. The first rigorous test on 800 blatt has just been completed. Based on their total scores, they can each secure an extra ‘bonus’ stipend of up to $6,000!

Each test will be on the next quarter Shas – 800 blatt. Thus, this new project enables them to increase their annual stipend considerably. The various study thrusts and encouragement at Shas Yiden to enhance their mastery of Shas, has captured the imagination and interest of yeshivos and kollelim throughout the Torah world. This new Shas Yiden project is named Mif’al Be’er Yaakov in blessed memory of Hagaon Harav Yaakov ben Harav Sholom Halevi Eisen, zt”l, father of the Pozna Rov.

Appreciation at Shas Yiden

Kollel avreichim the world over, they and their wives and families, are recognized as being truly moser nefesh for Torah. Most live in strained circumstances, their monthly checks are often late (some have to wait up to six or seven months for a check) and meeting the monthly expenses or getting something new and special for one’s eishes chayil or children, or for Yom Tov is not possible.

Therefore, when he founded Shas Yiden in 2008, the Pozna Rov, Harav Hagaon Avrohom Halevi Eisen, shlit”a, made a commitment that the avreichim geonim at Shas Yiden who are bnei aliyah devoted to limud Hatorah would be shown the respect and appreciation that they deserve. First and foremost, they and their wives would be able to rest assured that their monthly checks would be paid on time, on or before every Rosh Chodesh. For the last 14 years, he has made sure to do so.

For the Nissan and Tishrei bein hazemanim, the avreichim geonim also receive two extra full checks. Additionally, there are also grants for the completion of written tests and farheren, and even help with the weddings of their children and special occasions! Furthermore, at the annual Siyum Hashas, the wife of each avreich receives an envelope with a cash ‘thank you’ gift.

Unique Learning Methods

An avreich who manages to be accepted into the academic body at Shas Yiden, within two years, keeping to the Shas Yiden schedule and system, will know the entire Shas clearly, if not by heart. There are now 100 avreichim geonim in six Shas Yiden Kollelim – five in Eretz Yisroel and one in London UK. All these avreichim geonim go through the entire Shas thoroughly every year – at least five times!

The veterans among the avreichim geonim, aside from completing Shas in its entirety, together with all the Rashi and Tosfos, also complete large sections of the Yerushalmi, the Dalet Chelkei Shulchan Aruch, Sifra and Sifrei, Rambam and Midrash. There are a significant number of other sections of Torah that are covered as well.

Since its modest beginning with just 6 avreichim, Shas Yiden has been in the forefront of developing ideas and devising learning methods to enable retention, and to motivate the avreichim geonim to achieve the annual goal of a Siyum Hashas every year before Chanukah. Aside from learning 7/7 per week (yes, 365 days a year, including Shabbos and Yom Tov!), written tests and oral farhers – on 50 blatt a week, 225 blatt a month and 2711 blatt (the entire Shas) at the end of the cycle, there are regular oral farheren by Talmidei Chachomim and Gedolei Hatorah who are proficient in gantz Shas.

Maran Hagaon Harav Shimon Galay

Maran Hagaon Harav Shimon Galay –
I could not believe my eyes…

At a Shas Yiden, Shas-wide farher in Bnei Brak last month.

Shas Yiden held another tough and searching, two-hour, Shas-wide farher in Bnei Brak for all its kollelim. The latest examiner was Maran Hagaon Asher Anshel Schwartz, shlit”a, Rosh Kollel Sanz in Bet Shemesh. In the opinion of the avreichim geonim, this farher was one of the most difficult and demanding to date, and they expressed their appreciation to Rav Schwartz who pushed them to the ‘max’, thereby spurring them on to redouble their efforts in their learning – as if their 45 blatt a day with Rashi and Tosfos were not enough motivation.

Stunned and Astounded

In a letter penned shortly after the farher, Rav Schwartz wrote the following:

“At Shas Yiden, the vision of the Pozna Rov, Hagaon Harav Avrohom Eisen, shlit”a, of learning techniques and programs to enable the completion of Shas  in a year have been developed. Thus, he would merit to produce legions of talmidei chachomim and exceptional geonim who are engaged with Toras Hashem, day and night.

“I have been privileged, with Hashem’s help, to test the avreichim geonim shlit”a, and I was stunned and astounded when my eyes witnessed these geonim exhibiting their mastery of masseches after masseches. On each question they answered correctly through a combination of memorization and exactitude, and without any hesitation. It was nothing short of amazing.

Praised is the eye that beheld this, and happy is the generation that merited such a phenomenon. Not only a wondrous encyclopedic knowledge of Shas, but their in-depth understanding of deep issues in Shas and the words of the Rishonim. I found them unbelievably knowledgeable – happy are our People to merit this.

Special Guest – Maran Harav Shimon Galay

A surprise special guest to attend the farher was the Gaon, Maran Harav Shimon Galay, shlit”a. A buzz went through the hall when he arrived to witness the avreichim geonim being put through their paces with the most searching questions.

In his own words: “I was able to be present when they were tested on the entire Shas b’al peh, and I could not believe my eyes. There they sat, exceptional talmidei chachomim whose awe of Heaven clearly precedes their wisdom, with their boundless prowess throughout Shas, with clear and precise knowledge and precise insights. Praised are eyes that merited to see this all.”

Apparently for some three hours after the farher, Rav Galay was still speaking about his experience at the Shas Yiden farher.

Jewish Royalty Honored In London

It was so appropriate that in the City of Royalty, London, there should be a distinguished and exciting gathering honoring true Jewish Malchus (royalty). Recently, the Yesodei Hatorah Hall in Stamford Hill was bedecked in finery fit for a monarch accompanied by courtiers and an entourage of nobility. The royalty that night was the Talmud, and the courtiers were 16 avreichim metzuyonim (outstanding young Torah scholars) of Shas Yiden, the internationally acclaimed network of unique Kollelim across Israel and in the UK. Each of these scholars was celebrating a siyum (conclusion) of the study of the Talmud in its entirety.

This gathering of pomp, circumstance and dignity celebrated the glory and wisdom of the Torah. The nobles present were Rabbis, Dayonim, and Rosh Yeshivos from the UK, as well as special guests – leading talmidei chachomim from Eretz Yisroel. The décor, banquet ‘fit for a king’ and the music, were unquestionably an inspiration to all present. This night was the first collective celebration of the London branch of Shas Yiden, which has been acclaimed as the first Torah network of its kind ever. Each of its scholars completes the study the Talmud from beginning to end, annually!

London has never experienced such a Torah gathering, and hundreds kept arriving at the Yesodei Hatorah hall to be part of this experience.

SHAS YIDEN – PHENOMENON OF THE TORAH WORLD

Over the centuries, the Torah, its wisdom, its study and laws have been the mainstay of the Jewish people. Its talmidei chachomim were always our leaders and guides. The central compendium of thought and law – the Talmud – is made up of some 1000 years of unbroken scholarship, comprising the Mishna and Gemara, followed by another 14 centuries of uninterrupted scholarship and commentary until the present day.

For centuries, the yeshiva world focused on certain tractates and others, due to the Exile and Dispersion of Jews throughout the world, were neglected, especially those sections of Kodshim and Taharos. Early in the 20th Century, the Chofetz Chaim rekindled great interest in the study of Kodshim, and towards the end of the 20th Century, Maran Hagaon Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz, zy”o, revived the study of Taharos

However, another dimension of Torah scholarship was still missing. Namely, the consolidation of all the branches of Talmud study as one totality. Talmidei chachomim who were able to do so and developed a thorough knowledge of the entire Talmud were known by the honorific of Shas Yiden, but they were a rarity.

In 2009, the Pozna Rov, Hagaon Harav Avrohom Eisen, shlit”a, of Flatbush, NY, had a vision of establishing a kollel in Eretz Yisroel, where each avreich  would commit to an intense regimen of completing the entire Talmud, annually, and would work to mastering it by heart. Based on the success, other branches of Shas Yiden would be opened. Those hearing of this vision were inclined to scoff and say that such a concept was flawed, and that never in the history of Torah study has such a comprehensive program been done.

Shas Yiden began in Bet Shemesh with 6 avreichim, and Rav Eisen persevered. Gradually the number of avreichim increased. After achieving a minyan, the numbers increased to 2 minyanim. The Sar Hatorah, Maran Hagaon, Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit”a, was asked to test their mettle, and he became enthused about the project. Year after year he tested them, gave his blessing to establish more such kollelim. In June 2018, with the establishment of the 3rd kollel – Shas Yiden–Yerushalayim – ‘Rav Chaim’ agreed to serve as the Nasi of the Shas Yiden Network. In the space of just 13 years, there are 6 now Shas Yiden Kollelim, with one of them in London, UK. The incredible success of Shas Yiden has been acclaimed by the Gedolei Torah across the Torah spectrum – Ashkenazim, Sefardim, Chassidim and the Yeshiva world.

THE TOUGHEST REGIMEN PROVES ITSELF – AGAIN AND AGAIN

The prowess of Shas Yiden as true masters of Talmud has been shown again and again. During the course of a year, 2-4 farhers (public and collective oral examinations) are held. The people most impressed by the all-encompassing knowledge of every page of the entire Talmud have been the examiners themselves. Each is a recognized gaon and leading talmid chochom, and each has been lavish in his praise of the Shas Yiden knowledge, and have penned letters of approbation.

The Shas Yiden website (www.shasyiden.com) has video recording of the farhers, which are watched again and again, and are reviewed by Torah scholars and yeshiva students across the world.

Shas Yiden have no vacation. It is a daily regimen every day of the year, including Shabbos and Yom Tov, and the days before each. The only ‘let-up’ is that the study load on those days is reduced from the daily 9 blatt (Talmud folios – both sides of the page) with 4 revisions (a total of 45 blatt a day), to 4 blatt with 4 revisions (a total of 20 blatt). The total number of blatt per year is 13,555. There are also no semester breaks. Every month they undergo a detailed written exam on 225 blatt.

This remarkable and demanding workload has propelled the Shas Yiden scholars into the forefront of Talmud learning, causing gedolei Torah, among them the mekubal, Maran Hagaon Harav David Abuuchatazeira to say: The geulah (redemption) of the Jewish people, rests on the Torah study of Shas Yiden.

“WE SPLIT 50-50”
– SAR HATORAH

Every year, the Sar Hatorah, Maran Hagaon Chaim Kanievsky, made it his custom to invite the Shas Yiden avreichim to his home and to farher them. Peppering them with questions from all over Shas in increasing complexity, his smile grows broader and broader as each of his questions are answered with precision regarding every source and page number in Shas. So much so is his pleasure at their prowess, at the conclusion of one farher, he exclaimed to the Pozna Rov: “Zei kennen Shas!” (They really know Shas.) During the last few years, the avreichim have also focused on mastering every Rashi and Tosfos b’al peh (by heart).

‘Rav Chaim’ was represented at the London Siyum Dinner by his long-time chavrusa (daily study partner), Hagaon Harav Yisroel Meir Druk, founder and head of Mosdos Tiferes Yisroel in Yerushalayim and Rishon L’Tzion. He brought a letter from ‘Rav Chaim’ to read out to the gathering. ‘Rav Chaim’ expressed his warm appreciation and regard for Shas Yiden and all its outstanding avreichim. Rav Druk added that these avreichim were acquiring the fulfilment of man’s purpose in both olam hazeh and olam haba, and praised their daily mesirus nefesh (total commitment). He reserved special words of praise for the wives of the avreichim who enable their husbands to devote virtually every minute to toiling in Torah. He added that during his hesped for the late Rebbetzin Batsheva Kanievsky, Rav Chaim’ said: “I promised her that the reward for all my Torah learning we would split 50-50.”

TOTAL MIND-FOCUS ON TORAH

The main speaker of the evening was Hagaon Hatzadik Yechezkel Shraga Boruch Halberstam, shlit”a, of Kiryat Sanz, near Netanya. He is the eldest son of the Sanzer Rebbe. A dynamic speaker and incredible talmid chochom, as a rule he does not accept invitation to speak abroad or outside of the Sanz communities. However, he greatly admires and has a warm regard for Shas Yiden, and also knows some of its avreichim metzuyonim personally. He has witnessed the outstanding success of Shas Yiden, and he felt it his duty to travel to this historic gathering in honor of the establishing and glorification of Torah scholarship in London.

He not only praised the scholarship of the gaonim of Shas Yiden and their diligence, but he extolled their negation of worldly pursuits and total mind-focus on Torah.

LONDON SHAS YIDEN

The launching of the London Shas Yiden kollel coincided with the onset of the Covid epidemic. Nevertheless, throughout the long months, the avreichim have pursued their daunting regimen and examinations which follow those of the Shas Yiden kollelim in Eretz Yisroel, and their results have been stellar.

The patron of Shas Yiden-London, and who recited the kaddish at the siyum, is Harav Hechover Yisroel Moskowitz. His son-in-law, Hagaon Harav Dovid Olevsky, shlit”a, was one of the outstanding avreichm of Shas Yiden-Yerushalayim, now serves as the Rosh Kollel of Shas Yiden-London.

The siyum itself was conducted by the Viznitzer Rebbe of London who was effusive in his praise of the achievements of Shas Yiden in London. It was significant that all merited to participate in such a gathering in this month of Adar, the month of simcha, celebrating the continuity of Torah by day and by night.

Hagaon Harav Chaim Dunner, shlit”a, electrified the evening with his stirring words in praise of Shas Yiden. He turned to the avreichim and declared: “You are awakening the jealousy of the community!” All those in attendance, or those who will hear of this gathering, will desire to emulate your achievements –to know the entire Shas from beginning to end, and that all the words of the Shas will be on their lips.

The Pozna Rov began the new Shas cycle with the commencement of Brochos. Rav Eisen recounted the beginning and development of Shas Yiden. He praised the ongoing generous support of philanthropists and regular people who have been inspired by the achievements of Shas Yiden and want to be part of this Torah success.

As the Pozna Rov concluded his words, the band and assembled choir broke out with songs in praise and honor of Torah, and the entire hall rose to join in dance and praise. This was a London royal evening to remember.

94 Geonim “Shas Yiden” gather for the Annual Siyum of 470 Shasim

Excitement in the Jewish World: 94 Geonim “Shas Yiden” gather for the Annual Siyum of 470 Shasim and Public Farher on the Entire Shas

By Rabbi Eliezer Sandler

The grand gathering of Maranan v’Rabbanan the Gedolei and Me’orei Hador, was presided over by Maran, Sar HatorahHagaon Hagadol Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit”a – the Nasi of the Shas Yiden Kollel Network. In an emotional letter to the gathering, the Rav wrote: “These are Emesdike (TRUE) Shas Yiden. Meritorious is Hagaon Harav Avrohom Eisen, the Pozna Rov, who has been the Nachshon (the very first) to produce avreichim who conclude and are examined on the entire Shas every year.”

The Sanzer Rebbe, shlit”a, said: When the Shas Yiden Kollel opened, all thought that even with its lofty goal, it would only be able to produce a few individuals proficient in the entire Shas. Today, to our joy, we witness a significant and tremendous Torah institution. Its Founder, the Pozna Rov, is certainly doing the shlichus (mission) of Klal Yisroel”

When the Boyaner Rebbe, shlit”a, left the hall, he grabbed the hand of the founder of Shas Yiden, the Pozna Rov and broke into an emotional rikud (dance)

 * The Mashpiah, Hagaon Hatzadik Reb Elimelech Biderman, shlit”a: “At this time, the malachei hashoress on High are dancing in honor of the Shas Yiden avreichim, and singing: ‘M’ein Olam Hazeh’ with regard to this awesome gathering!”

A TORAH REVOLUTION

The Torah world has closely followed the exciting annual gathering at which the Shas Yiden geonim conclude the entire Shas, once again. Before the Siyum, they faced a public examination on the entire Shas, which, in the last year alone, they have EACH covered a minimum of FIVE times. As has been done each year, the gathering is honored by the appearance of Maranan v’Rabbanan the Gedolei Hatorah of our generation. They all came to express their appreciation of the young geonim of the Shas Yiden Network, founded by the Pozna Rov, Hagaon Harav Avrohom Eisen, of Brooklyn, NY. During these last 13 years, Shas Yiden has brought about a worldwide Torah revolution.  Its watchword is: “Lo bashomayim hee” – “It is not in Heaven” to know the entire Shas in depth with all-encompassing knowledge and comprehension.”

The magnificent gathering was an opportunity to recognize the rapid expansion of the Shas Yiden network. The dais seated some 94 avreichim geonim, all completely proficient in the entire Shas.  The network has six kollelim: Yerushalayim, Beit Shemesh, Beitar, Bnei Brak, Kiryat Sefer and Stamford Hill in London, UK. This Torah reality crushes the long-believed myth that knowing Shas in its entirety is something from the past. Here, for all to see, is the fulfillment of the brocho of the Sar Hatorah, Hagaon Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit”a, the Nasi of Shas Yiden. For over a decade, when Kollel Shas Yiden was just a minyan of avreichim in a small room in Beit Shemesh, Rav Kanievsky spoke of the vision of the Pozna Rov, and blessed and encouraged him to establish additional branches of Shas Yiden. To many it appeared to be a distant and, maybe, an impossible vision, but today it is clearly a vibrant reality.

THE NACHSHON FOR “YEDIAS HASHAS KULO”

This year, especially, Hagaon Harav Chaim was so enthused by the great growth of Shas Yiden. Aside from his personal appearance at the event, he also brought his personal letter to be read aloud at the Siyum on his behalf by his chavrusa, Hagaon Harav Yisroel Meir Druk. In the letter, he praises the greatness of Shas Yiden. “Praiseworthy are these talmidei chachomim, outstanding in their great knowledge of Torah, the entire Shas Bavli in breadth and depth. These are Emesdike (true) Shas Yiden, whom I have personally tested, and I found them beki’im gedolim (exceptionally proficient) in the entire Shas.”

Maran Sar Hatorah also noted the great revolution in the Torah world that the Pozna Rov began 13 years ago. As a result, the concept of Shas Yiden is not confined to history – rather, the Shas Yiden story has inspired other efforts in the Torah world to learn the ‘whole Shas’. He also highlighted the fact that the Shas Yiden avreichim are not only au fait in the Gemora of the Shas, but they constantly review all the Gemora, Rashis and Tosfos throughout the year to know it all b’al peh. “Praised is the Pozna Rov that he merited to be the Nachshon (the very first) with this idea to establish such kollelim, and to raise up incredible talmidei chachomim who merit to study Gemora, Rashi and Tosfos, and to do a siyum of the entire Shas each year, through great effort and with great clarity.”

When he concluded reading the letter, Rav Druk added, in the name of Hagaon Yitzchak Shaul, son of Rav Chaim, how much his father enjoys and looks forward to the visits of the Shas Yiden avreichim when they come to be farherd.

A FATHER’S TEARS

It is difficult to find the words to adequately describe this incredible gathering. From entering to exiting, the atmosphere was electric. Prior to the farhers, the 94 avreichim geonim came in and took their places and were rocking back and forth… Each had a sefer in his hand. Every minute of the day, they are bound up with their pages of Shas, including the time at the Siyum gathering. The fact is that Shas Yiden Kollelim are not limited to specific times. The avreichim are not at Kollel – they are the Kollel. They do not have time for functions – they have 9 blatt a day with four revisions to complete. On erev Shabbos /Yom Tov, and on Shabbos and Yom Tov themselves, they are required to complete 4 blatt with four revisions – ALL to enable each of them to complete five times Shas every year – a minimum total of 13,555 blatt.

It was amazing to see all the Shas Yiden avreichim geonim all together, their faces shining with purity and Torah knowledge. ‘Ruach acheres’ – A different spirit encompassed them all. The test was about to begin. The avreichim from London and those from the newly established kollel in Kiryat Sefer, took their places among the others.

Suddenly an older member of the audience had a tear rolling down his cheek and he tried to brush it away. It appears that he was the father of two Shas Yiden – two not one, from the same home. “Yes, my boys are learning Gemora, Rashi and Tosfos, every day and night. Boruch Hashem, they really know Shas! As soon as the test starts, you will understand why I am so emotional and excited. Even though you don’t have a son here, you will be just as excited.” The father was asked, but isn’t this kollel for illu’im (remarkable scholars) – are both your sons illuim? “Actually, no. This kollel is for those who are serious about their Torah. It’s for those who learn with all their might and gevura, day and night. “Being an illui has never been a condition to becoming a godol in Torah,” finished the father.

A TORAH TIDAL WAVE – THE FARHERS

Two farhers were conducted. This was the moment to which all the avreichim geonim had been gearing themselves. As with all the farhers that they have had to date, there was no way to anticipate the questions and direction of the examiners. Simply, the questions could emanate from any gemora, each within its own context and the approach of the examiners. They were each eminent talmidei chachomim occupying significant scholarly positions in limud Hatorah.

The Rosh Hakollelim, Hagaon Harav Moshe Isaac Samet, shlit”a, opened the gathering with the following words: “We are again entering an awesome gathering that is unique in its combination of yir’ah (trepidation) and rachamim (mercy), a holy gathering before Hashem. Lift your eyes and look about you, how our avreichim have gathered from across Eretz Yisroel and from as far as London – the talmidei chachomim of Shas Yiden. “Vihi noam…” May the pleasantness of Hashem our G-d rest upon us etc.”

Without any further ado, he gave the microphone to the first examiner: Maran Hagaon Harav Chaim Freund, shlit”a, Rosh Kollel of Yeshivas ‘Nachalas Moshe’ in Bnei Brak and Rav of Kehilas Lomdei Torah in Rechovot. After a brocho of good wishes he went to challenge the full complement of Shas Yiden with a barrage of questions. Each of the avreichim had a microphone and the collective and immediate responses sounded like a tidal wave of Torah, quoting sources from all over Shas and from the Rishonim. It was a battle of Torah titans.

The second examiner was Maran Hagaon Harav Avrohom Direnfeld, Rosh Kollelei Iyun of Belz, Rav of Kehillot Belz in Tel-Aviv and Beit Shemesh, a member of Badatz Machazikei Hadas. Interestingly one of the Shas Yiden avreichim being tested was his son. As with the first farher, no quarter was given in these Torah clashes. All those watching the farhers were ‘blown away.’ How could these young men master it all? But they certainly did.

Among the audience were many Americans studying in Yeshiva in Israel, and whose parents are supporters of Shas Yiden. They could not believe their eyes and immediately after the farhers, they were on their phones calling home telling their parents about the awesome gathering that they had just witnessed.

At the conclusion of the second farher, Maran Hagaon Harav Avrohom Direnfeld, shlit”a, said: “After so many tragedies over this last year, we are fortunate to witness such a simcha as this. That in our midst are great geonim who know the entire Shas. This is an amazing Kiddush Sheim Shomayim!”

470 SIYUMEI HASHAS IN ONE GREAT SIYUM

After the farhers, the entire gathering moved to the adjoining hall for a true seudas mitzvah celebrating the Siyum of Torah She’b’al Peh. The Shas Yiden geonim were surrounded by their families – including their parents and their children, all basking in the nachas of the moment. They had all concluded a year of toiling in Torah. Each family, a full partner with their Shas Yid Gaon. Once again, as in past years, the wives were each given a present, as well as a generous cash-filled envelope and a personal letter from the Pozna Rov.

Supporters of Shas Yiden participated, and were quite overcome by all that they were witnessing at this seudas mitzvah. The atmosphere became more intense with the arrival of the honored guests – Maranan V’rabbanan Gedolei Hatorah v’Hachassidus.

It was clear that the Shas Yiden geonim merited special attention from the Gedolei Hador, shlit”a. This is a result of the many public farhers that the Shas Yiden avreichim undergo every few months, closely tested by the Gedolei Torah from across the Torah spectrum.  It all reached a crescendo with the arrival of the Nasi of the Shas Yiden Network, Maran Sar Hatorah. The glorious singing and dancing was something to behold. With him on the dais were Maranan Hageonim Hagedolim shlit”a, including: Harav Boruch Dov Povarsky, Harav Shimon Badani, the Sanzer Rebbe, the Boyaner Rebbe and Harav Shimon Galai.

Bearing in mind that each of the avreichim had concluded Shas 5 times during the course of the year, the total number of Shas completed by the avreichim geonim was 470! These were all combined into one grand and inspiring Siyum Gadol.

THE SANZER REBBE RECITES THE HADRAN

The Sanzer Rebbe recited the Hadran and was very emotional when he addressed the gathering. He said that if just one individual does a siyum of a gemora, we make a Yom Tov lerabanan. Here, at the Siyum Hagadol we consider that almost 100 geonim have completed the entire Shas, b’al peh, with chazoras (multiple revising) in-depth study and thorough comprehension. There is no greater Yom Tov than this! It is with wonderment that “we see before our eyes, the fulfilment of the Divine Promise “that the Torah will not be forgotten by his descendants.” What in yesteryear was the inheritance of the few, the Pozna Rov, shlit”a, has made into a gigantic revolution, and we see the Shas Yiden Network growing exponentially. It must be a mattonah (gift) that the Pozna Rov was granted from Heaven, for he is certainly doing the shlichus (mission) of Klal Yisroel.”

The Sanzer Rebbe pointed out that he knows some of the Shas Yiden avreichim personally. Their faces reflect their cleaving to Torah. The chein they acquired through toiling in Torah, envelops them. This all clearly negates the power of the yetzer, hastens the geulah, and is a source of salvation for all of Klal Yisroel.”

THE KADDISH

The honor of reciting the kaddish on behalf of all the geonim was given to Harav Hechossid Yisroel Moskowitz, shlit”a, of London and patron of the London Shas Yiden Kollel. His son-in-law, Hagaon Harav Avrohom Dovid Olevsky, shlit”a, was one of the leading talmidei chachomim of Shas Yiden-Yerushalayim. He was appointed to serve as the Rosh Kollel of Shas Yiden-London. A second son-in-law, Harav Yisroel Shvirtz, is also one of the avreichim geonim in Shas Yiden-Yerushalayim.

THE BOYANER REBBE TAKES HIS LEAVE

Quite a way into the evening’s program, an emotional moment took place. The Boyaner Rebbe, shlit”a, was about to leave and the Pozna Rov escorted him to the building entrance. Unexpectedly, as they exited the hall, the Rebbe grabbed the Pozna Rov by the hand and began to dance with him, with the abandonment of Simchas Torah. He was overcome by the specialness of the simcha and expressed his amazement at the Torah revolution engendered by Shas Yiden.

HAMASHPIA HAGADOL REB ELIMELECH

All were privileged to hear the inspiring and warm words of Maran Hamashpiah Hagadol, Hatzadik Reb Elimelech Biderman, shlit”a, who has a special and close connection with Shas Yiden. In a dramatic speech, he described how the vision of the Pozna Rov, some 13 years earlier developed “skin and bones, veins and sinews” in such an amazing manner that there are now almost 100 Shas Yiden, something that is almost unbelievable and a cause for consternation.

“In the beginning, I thought that this developing of Emesdike (true) Shas Yiden was an exaggeration,” said the Mashpia when interviewed. “Perhaps the avreichim don’t really know Shas, never mind the entire Shas. Who had ever heard of training large groups to know the entire Shas? However, after I personally sat with them and farhered them, I saw that this was no exaggeration. Each of them knows Shas from beginning to end – the words of Shas are on their lips.”

And then the Mashpia added excitedly: “On Shabbos Kodesh we are accustomed to sing “M’ein Olam Haba” (taste of the World-to-Come), but now, here at this time, the Malachei Hashores in Heaven, in honor of the Shas Yiden geonim, must be dancing and singing: “M’ein Olam Hazeh” (a taste of this world). These Shas Yiden have shown how it is possible to really be mesameach (to rejoice) with Hashem in this world. Even now, just to sit under the same roof with the Shas Yiden avreichim is a true fulfilment of experiencing Olam Hazeh in the fullest sense of what Olam Hazeh could and should be.

OTHER GEDOLIM IN ATTENDANCE

Other speakers and many Gedolim were in attendance. They included Maranan Hageonim Hagedolimshlit”a: Harav Shimon Badani, Chaver Moetzet Chachmei Hatorah and Harav Binyamin Finkel, Mashgiach of Mir Yerushalayim who both addressed the gathering, as well as Harav Yerachmiel Ungarisher, Rosh Yeshiva Bais Medrash Elyon; Harav Moshe Shimon Edelstein, Rav Neof Yosef; Harav Moshe ben Shimon, Rav Bnei Brak and Rosh Yeshiva Or Elitzur; Harav Chaim Peretz Berman, Rosh Yeshiva Ponevez; Harav Shimon Galai, Kollel Taharos; Harav Itamar Garbuz, Rosh Yeshiva Orchot Torah; Harav Chaim Feinstein, Rosh Yeshiva Ateret Shlomo; Harav Shevach Tzvi Rosenblatt, Rav Bnei Brak. Many other Rabbonim and Roshei Yeshiva joined the dais during the gathering.

After many joyous hours at the gathering, the talmidei chachomim and geonim began dancing with the joy of Torah in their beings. The prayer in the hearts of the Shas Yiden avreichim was, Ribbono shel Olam, just as you enabled us to complete the Siyum Hashas for 5781, may You bless us to do so for 5782 and beyond. May the Torah never cease from our mouths and those of our children, through all generations.

Some of the Shas-wide questions FIRED at the Grand Farher
-all in short succession

The avreichim hurled back page references and sources from all over Shas with a breathtaking knowledge. When they would pause, it was to refer and to determine the different sources and to debate with the examiners. All present were amazed at what their eyes were beholding.

  • Where are kerem rivai and netta rivai mentioned in Shas, and what is the difference between them?
  • What are the halochos learned from the posuk, “Lo sochlu al hadam – You shall not eat over the blood?”
  • Where in Shas do we learn the din of biryah and in what context? How many halachos are derived from biryah?
  • What is the reason that there are no lashes for a lav she’ayn bo maaseh (a negative precept that has no action)? And where is this mentioned in Shas?
  • Why do we not learn that one who admits to a fine (knas) is freed from shvuas pikadon (an oath of deposit) rather from a different drasha? How many implications can be found in Shas regarding the din of modeh biknas (admits to the fine) and where?
  • What is the source of tosefes (adding time to) Shabbos & Shmittah?
  • Regarding bitul (annulling items in a mixture) – how many items are there that cannot be annulled in a mixture due to their importance? (This led to many unanticipated examples of chaticha hareuyah lehiskabed bah and davar shebeminyan mentioned in Shas)
  • Who may a Beis Din put to death without giving him a hasro’o (warning)
  • There are laws of mixtures regarding min bemino (an item in its same category) and besh’ein mino (or not in its same category). In what way are the two reflected? What if wine becomes vinegar? What about R. Yehuda and two bloods?
  •  Which halachos are derived from kabbalah (tradition)and not from Torah verses?
  • Where is it better to live? With a son or a daughter?
  • How many times and where in Shas, does it declare that the Torah is not in Heaven?
  • How many times in Shas does it say that one should not do miraculous actions?
  • How do we reconcile that the gemora says we do not listen to Eliyahu Hanavi and then mandates the opposite?
  • Where does it refer to a transgression done by thought alone?
  • If a person shoots an arrow at another and converts to being Jewish, or it is the targeted who converts, before the arrow strikes the targeted person, how do we derive the applicable law from Shas?
  • Where in Shas do we learn a law from what occurred before Matan Torah? And where do we learn that it is not so? What does the Tosfos Yeshonim say in this regard? What does it say in Kesuvos, and where is this referenced in Yevamos and Zevachim?
  • Where do we find that Bnei Aliyah (superior scholars) are few?
  • Who is to be preferred – the migmar (who learns) or misbar (who explains)? Sinai (filled with knowledge) or the uprooter of mountains (great reasoning powers)? Sefer Torah or talmid chochom?

Rav Direnfeld commented that these choices do not apply to the Shas Yiden because they each comprise a combination of all these traits. To watch the live farher, please click on www.shasyiden.com

The Close of Cheshvan 5782                                                                                                           B”H

In honor of the Yom Tov for Rabbanan, the Annual Siyum Hashas of the avreichim geonim of the Shas Yiden Kollelim in Eretz Yisroel and in the Diaspora, under the leadership of our colleague, the Pozna Rov, Hagaon Harav Avrohom Halevi Eisen, shlit”a.

Praised are these talmidei chachomim, most outstanding in Torah, who know the entire Shas Bavli in breadth and depth. They are Emesdike (true) Shas Yiden whom I have tested personally, and I saw that they were extremely knowledgeable in the entire Shas.

And praised is the Pozna Rov, shlit”a, who merited to be the Nachshon (the very first) with this idea to establish these kollelim and to train outstanding Talmidei Chachomim who merit to learn Gemora, Rashi and Tosfos and to complete the entire Shas every year, through effort and with clear knowledge.

More recently, he added an additional kollel in the Torah city of Kiryat Sefer, in addition to the new kollel he opened in the city of London.

I send my blessing to the Rabbonim of these kollelim that they should merit to know the entire Torah, “to learn, to teach, to observe and to do, and to fulfill all the words of Your Torah in love.” And may our colleague, Hagaon Harav Avrohom Eisen merit to open more and more kollelim and to increase and honor Torah.

And I bless them that, in this merit, all the wishes of their hearts will be fulfilled for the good with brocha v’hatzlocha in all matters; and for all the brochos that are said in the Torah – for a good livelihood, for healing and yeshuos until the coming of the Righteous Redeemer, Amen

The Shas Yiden geonim from the London Shas Yiden Kollel Arrived in Israel, and Graced Annual Siyum Hashas

On the morning after the Siyum they went to a Lechaim in the home of Maran Sar Hatorah, shlit”a.

One of the high points of this year’s annual gathering of Shas Yiden, with its oral farher (examination) on the entire Shas, as well as the Siyum Hashas, was the participation, for the first time, by the contingent from London, UK. Shas Yiden-London was opened a year and a half ago by the Pozna Rov, founder of Shas Yiden, with the encouragement of Maran Sar Hatorah, Hagaon Hagadol, Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit”a. the Nasi of Shas Yiden.

The London Shas Yiden geonim landed in Israel together with the patron of Shas Yiden-London, the honored philanthropist Harav Hechosid Reb Yisroel Moskowitz, shlit”a. Two of his sons-in-law are among the Shas Yiden geonim. One, formerly one of the top talmidei chachomim in Shas Yiden-Yerushalayim, Hagaon Harav Avrohom Dov Olevsky, shlit”a, serves as the Rosh Kolel of Shas Yiden-London. The other is Hagaon Harav Yisroel Shvirtz, shlit”a, who learns in Shas Yiden-Yerushalayim.

The London scholars joined all the other Shas Yiden geonim from Yerushalayim, Bnei Brak, Beit Shemesh, Beitar and Kiryat Sefer in the incredible public Shas examination. In just a few minutes it was clear that they all shared a deep knowledge of all the tractates in Shas. This received great acclaim in the Torah scholarship community that it had been established that the Shas Yiden kollelim had shattered the myth that such total knowledge only lay with talmidei chachomim of bygone times.

The achievements of the five Shas Yiden kollelim in Eretz Yisroel with these geonei Hashas who are also proficient in other Torah subjects, and with the addition of Shas Yiden-London have shown that such achievements are possible in chutz la’aretz (the Diaspora) and are able to face the same rigorous testing.

A special and unforgettable moment for the Shas Yiden-London avreichim geonim during their Israel trip, took place on the morrow of the Grand Farher and Siyum. They were invited to a Lechaim in the home of Maran Sar Hatorah, Hagaon Hagadol Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit”a. There Maran expressed his great excitement at the establishment of Shas Yiden branches in chutz la’aretz. He then made an exception to his custom by drinking a ‘lechaim’ with the visitors. Thereafter, each of the kollel rabbonim met with Maran Sar Hatorah individually, and who blessed them warmly that they should each merit to continue rising in Torah.

“Rav Chaim’s Brocho” Spawns yet ANOTHER Kollel Plus ANOTHER Farher

“Rav Chaim’s Brocho” Spawns yet ANOTHER Kollel
Plus ANOTHER Farher

By Rabbi Eliezer Sandler

It was just four years ago, at a Shas Yiden farher on the entire Shas at the home of the Nasi of Shas Yiden, Maran Sar Hatorah, Hagaon Hagadol Harav Chaim Kanievski, shlit”a. “Rav Chaim” had made a request to the founder of Shas Yiden, Hagaon Harav Avrohom Eisen, the Pozna Rov, shlit”a, to open a Shas Yiden kollel in Bnei Brak. Rav Eisen did, and it took off with a minyan of avreichim geonim

Now, he told “Rav Chaim” that he had been asked by Rabbonim in Yerushalayim and other Torah communities to open more Shas Yiden Kollelim. They saw how unique the program was, especially with each of the avreichim geonim completing Shas every year. Aside from finding suitable avreichim geonim, it would be a tremendous fiscal responsibility. He asked for “Rav Chaim’s” opinion and for his brocho.

Without batting an eyelid and with a broad smile “Rav Chaim” gave a warm brocho and said that Rav Eisen should blessed to open TEN such kollelim! He well knew the worth and ‘product’ of Shas Yiden, after all he had tested them for years, and the Sar Hatorah gave an amazing approbation – “I can say that they know Shas!”

Now – A Sixth Shas Yiden Kollel

With this Rosh Chodesh Elul, a SIXTH Shas Yiden Kollel was opened in Kiryat Sefer – Modiin! The excitement at grooming Shas Yiden in this Torah community has stirred the imagination of tens and tens of avreichim, all who wish to learn how to master Shas by heart. They are expected to cover 13,555 blatt a year – the entire Shas 5 times! The aim is also to master every Rashi and Tosfos b’al peh! While there are so many applicants for the twelve slots, competition is fierce and the entrance examinations are grueling.

Twelve tears ago. Shas Yiden started with 6 avreichim geonim in Beit Shemesh, where there are now 23, Yerushalayim (15), Bnei Brak (18), Beitar (12) and London (13). With the new Shas Yiden in Kiryat Sefer, the total will be 93. The Rosh of all the kollelim is Hagaon Harav Moshe Isaac Samet, shlit”a.

Another Dynamic Farher

What better a way to celebrate the opening of another Shas Yiden kollel than with another dynamic farher of all the avreichim geonim? This, just within two months of the last farher, and which is posted on the Shas Yiden website (www.shasyiden.com). The avreichim geonim gathered in Bnei Brak and were tested vigorously back and forth throughout Shas. Each Shas Yid had his own microphone, and the responses were like a Torah tidal wave. As well, there were individual debates between the Shas Yiden and the examiners.

Each of the examiners came with his own style and searching questions. Some involved identifying passages and even specific wording used in various masechtos, others contextual or contrasting, and many others in depth and explanations of Rishonim. There were also ‘trick’ questions that tested their mettle. One examiner was Maran Hagaon Chaim Tzvi Shapira, shlit”a, Rav Khal Chassidim Ramat Aharon, Rosh Av Beit Din Belz in Eretz Yisroel and Rosh Yeshivas Belz in Bnei Brak. The other examiner was Maran Hagaon Harav Matzliach Chai Mazuz, shlit”a, Rav in Rishon Lezion and Rosh Yeshivat Kisei Rachamim, Bnei Brak.

Gedolim and Luminaries of the Generation

Rav Shapira said that he felt inadequate to express his amazement and surprise when he examined the Shas Yiden. “Not only do they know Shas, but the commentaries as well, and with incredible clarity… praised is the eye that has witnessed this.” With that he turned to the supporters of Shas Yiden who were present and declared: “You should know that Shas Yiden is the best investment of your lives – in this world and the World-to-Come.”

He then went on to say, “For me, today is like a Yom Tov. There was not a question that I asked from across the entire Shas that they did not answer, whether relating to exact recall or clear analysis as required by Chaza”l… Without doubt, the future gedolim and luminaries of our generation will come from Shas Yiden.”

Commenting on the farher, Rav Mazuz said, “Aside from asking many questions, I was privileged to ‘walk’ with them through all the areas of Shas. I so enjoyed hearing their full and all-encompassing answers and was amazed by the breadth and full mastery by all the avreichim geonim. The entire Shas is sharply honed in their mouths, including Kodashim and Taharot. They are like those rare ones who can claim that ‘I am versed in all Six (Sidrei Mishna)’ (refer Bava Metzia 114b and Rashi’s comment). “Praised is a generation that such has been possible in its time!”

The Torah World Phenomenon Inspires Again

The Torah World Phenomenon Inspires Again
By Rabbi Eliezer Sandler

“You are all so proficient in Shas, Rashi and Tosfos, that your minds are Talmudic
minds and your reasoning is Talmudic reasoning,” declared Maran Hagaon, the Rishon l’Tzion,
Harav Yitzchak Yosef, shlit”a, to the avreichim geonim of Shas Yiden.
“Such an assembly as this, is an incredible Kiddush Hashem, and hastens the Geulah,”
added Maran Hagaon Harav Bezalel Rudinsky of Monsey, NY.

Post-Covid 19 Farher in Yerushalayim
These heartfelt words of admiration followed an amazing ‘post-Covid 19’ public father in Yerushalayim conducted by these two Geonim, which covered the entire Shas in depth!
“Such proficiency in Shas causes one’s reasoning not to be simply a personal opinion, rather true Talmudic reasoning. Thus, you will readily come to the halacha throughout the Torah.”
Maran, the Rishon l’Tzion, was expressing his amazement to the avreichim geonim of the Kollel Shas Yiden, after the public farher from in-depth reasoning on Shas through to practical halacha, and he enjoyed their absolute mastery of each subject discussed.

Shas Yiden’s Remarkable Growth
In just the last seven years, Shas Yiden has grown from one Kollel in Beit Shemesh with just over a minyan of avreichim to five Kollelim! There are now 76 avreichim geonim. The kollelim are in Yerushalayim, Bnei Brak, Beit Shemesh, Beitar and London, UK. The big motivator for the expansion is the Nasi of Shas Yiden, Maran Sar Hatorah, Hagaon Hagadol Rav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit”a. After testing the avreichim geonim for years, he gave his brocha to the
founder, the Pozna Rov, Hagaon Harav Avrohom Eisen, shlit”a, to open further kollelim. Planning is underway for a sixth kollel to open by Kislev 5782 (December 2021).

A Unique Program
The idea of having each avreich submit to such a very demanding daily regimen and to complete Shas so thoroughly each year, is unique in the Torah world. They each conclude the entire Shas FIVE times a year (13,555 blatt) with every Rashi and Tosfos, all of which they learn to master b’al peh! Acceptance is through a searching examination on 450 blatt and the ability
and commitment to keep up with the pace of learning, namely, 7 days a week.
Public Farheren The idea of public oral examinations of Shas Yiden has become very popular. This wondrous spectacle, for that is what it is, to see such incredible scholarship on display, has been repeated regularly, sometimes three or four times in a year. The frequency notwithstanding, every time such a test takes place, the spectacle reverberates throughout the Torah world and causes waves of amazement. This has an incredible impact on those who study Torah, and who are able to view the past farheren on the Shas Yiden website.

“I was Blown Away”

The public farher exam was also conducted by Maran Hagaon Harav Bezalel Rudinsky, shlit”a, Rosh Yeshiva Ohr Reuven and Rav of Cong. Ahavas Yitzchok in Monsey, NY. He is known for his erudition in all Torah subjects, and who personally completes Bavli, Yerushalmi and the entire Shulchan Aruch every year. The two Geonim examiners questioned the avreichim geonim for well over an hour, and derived much satisfaction from the amazing mastery of every corner of Shas by the Shas Yiden.

At the conclusion of the farher, Rav Rudinsky was all-American when he declared, “I was blown away by the Shas Yiden. This gathering is an incredible Kiddush Hashem – that Jews should know Shas in such a manner! Such a gathering hastens the Geulah (Redemption), and if I can be part of it, I feel a great zechus (merit).”

Impact Worldwide
Rav Rudinsky said that so many Jews throughout the world have been inspired and have increased their Torah learning since they heard about the phenomenon of the Shas Yiden Kollel network. “You have strengthened thousands of Jews in the mitzvah of acquiring Torah knowledge, to the point that ‘the words of Torah should be ready in your mouth so that if any man will ask you a question, you shall not fumble; rather you should be able to respond
immediately’, which is the way of Shas Yiden,” he said.

New Questioning Format
The gathering, as on the previous occasions, amazed all who attended, with a
continuous flow of brilliant questions. However, on this occasion by way of a change, most of the questions were in-depth questions. The avreichim geonim had to draw examples from all over Shas to Halachic-Conceptual questions where the answers could not be derived from a superficial knowledge level of Shas. Not unexpectedly, the avreichim geonim weighed and considered all the volumes of Shas, and delivered in depth reasoning while throwing out ideas
from all over Shas, as well as from halachic sources and the latter-day poskim. This was all to the amazement of the Rabbonim examining them, and who declared: “You also know Choshen Mishpat by heart?”

This amazing rischa d’oraisa (tumultuous Torah discussion) closed with the heartfelt words of the Rishon l’Tzion, who told the story of how his late revered father, Maran Hagaon Ovadia Yosef, zt”l, who had mastered Shas at age 15, would encourage others to master Shas. He also spoke about those who support and ensure the vibrant continuity of Shas Yiden. “Shas Yiden is unique in the Torah world,” he declared.

Some of the wide-ranging questions:
A short selection of questions referencing numerous sources from across Shas that led to extensive debate between the questioners and the avreichim geonim.

  • How many implications are there if we say safek d’oraisa is l’kula implies being lenient d’oraisa or d’rabbanan?
  • It is known from the Brisker Rov that it is preferable if there is a support from the Torah, more than if we know the matter itself from real life, because the Torah verse is of greater reality than the object or matter itself. What are the supports for this statement from across Shas?
  • As well, when a Tanna says a reason in a Mishna, where does the Gemara still attempt to bring support statements from the Torah?
  • Is there a concept of arvus applicable to geirim?
  • Is there a chazaka for someone who says that he paid a debt within 30 days – because we say that there is a chazaka that one does not pay before the time limit of the loan?
  • Is the birth of twins considered an extra ‘plus’ for the father?
  • Can you bring a support for the Bach that rov ganvei Yisrael is not the simple meaning?
  • When may one tell an untruth, and under what conditions, and how many times and where is it mentioned in Shas?
  • What is the source in Shas for a Mora d’asra?

Shas Yiden Kollel opens in LONDON!

Shas Yiden Kollel opens in LONDON!

With the blessing of Sar Hatorah and Nasi of Shas Yiden, the UK takes a giant step forward as Torah study is being restored to its pristine glory.

On Rosh Chodesh Tammuz (June 23), Shas Yiden opened its first Kollel outside of Israel in Stamford Hill, London. This momentous occasion is accompanied by a special brocho and wishes from the Nasi of Shas Yiden, Sar Hatorah, Maran Hagaon Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit”a:

The Brocho of Sar Hatorah

…the Founder of Shas Yiden Kollelim Network who already responded to my request and opened additional kollelim in Eretz Yisroel where groups of incredible and outstanding talmidei chachomim have merited to study and complete the entire Shas every year with extraordinary diligence and clarity.

They have visited with me numerous times and I tested them on Shas, and they were amazing in their exceptional knowledge of the Shas in depth and entirety. And now he has merited to open a new Kollel in the capital city of London where the scholars will maintain the same study regimen and load as they do here at Shas Yiden in the Holy Land.

Over the last 11 years, Shas Yiden has completely changed the approach of the Torah world to the idea of learning and mastering the entire Shas (Talmud). In yesteryear, such a feat was indeed rare and very few individuals became a bona fide ‘Shas Yid’ and spent many years mastering tractates, many of them not regularly learned in yeshivos.

When the Pozna Rov, Hagaon Harav Avrohom Eisen, shlit”a, founded Shas Yiden, many across Israel and abroad scoffed at the idea of each of the resident scholars completing the entire Shas every year. After being tested annually by Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit”a, followed by his publicized lavish praise, the Torah world sat up and took notice. Then, some three or four times a year, these avreichim are put through their paces by the leading talmidei chachomim geonim of the Torah world with open, public oral examinations.

The avreichim not only fielded questions on both known and obscure topics from the entire Shas, but were expected to be able to recite the page and context of each answer. To a man, those testing them said that in all their years they had never witnessed such a phenomenon as Shas Yiden, where the entire student body were so proficient and all knew the entire Talmud, Rashi and Tosfos by heart.

At the most recent Siyum Hashas in last December, Maran Hagaon Harav Gershon Edelstein, shlit”a, Rosh Yeshiva of Ponevez, declared that the method of study at Shas Yiden and their accomplishments was indeed the correct way of Talmudic study for the true mastery of Talmud.

At Shas Yiden, acceptance is based on each avreich passing a detailed exam on at least 450 blatt, and who is prepared to adhere to the very demanding daily regimen. Each day they have to master 8 full Talmud folios with 4 revisions – totaling 40 blatt a day, which translates into 13,555 blatt per year. Already 4 Kollelim with 62 unique and outstanding Talmud scholars have changed the Torah landscape in Israel, and now Shas Yiden has begun its first foray into the Diaspora in London.

There are 12 hand-picked avreichim metzuyonim (outstanding scholars) who were tested by the Rosh Hakollelim, Hagaon Harav Moshe Isaac Samet, shlit”a, under whose direction the London Shas Yiden Kollel will operate. They, too, will undergo monthly in-depth tests on 225 blatt.

An official opening of the London Shas Yiden Kollel will be scheduled later in the year. To witness the prowess of the Shas Yiden avreichim, please click on www.shasyiden.com and then on ‘watch live farher’.
